Faithful and True

One of the amazing truths about Scripture is it's sheer reliability. There has never (not once in any way!) been an archaeolgical discovery that contradicts the biblical accounts. In fact, the oldest existing portions of Scripture are literally miraculous in their direct continuity with our current biblical text! What that means is that in every discovery of ancient texts from Scripture, the documents we find match the text we know and use today.

Let that sit for a minute. The things we read today are the same things that believers read then. It's not a mythologized account, where Jesus is 10' tall and shoots lighting from his eyes as he exits the tomb, but an accurate accounting of the most important truths in the universe. In fact, the oldest existing portions of Scripture we have are from Numbers 6. They date to before the fall of the temple to Babylon in 586 BC. And they're essentially identical to what you read today (another interesting part- the text was inscribed on necklaces: wearable faith isn't anything new!).

The Word of God is the single most trustworthy text in the world. It is always right. It is always true. It is completely trustworthy. It is also always transformational.

The question is- what are you doing with it? You need to know the Word and you need to let the Word transform you. Get into God's faithful and true Word and let His Word work in you. Open it up today and see what God has to tell you!

Read it through. Pray it in. Live it out.

Who I am Doesn't Like Who I've Been

Maybe you've been there: your past catches up to your present and you REALLY don't like the conflagration that ensues.  For many on the church, your past catching up to you can be a death sentence for your usefulness in the kingdom of God.  You become the pariah, cast out, looked down on, and really not welcome because of something you've done.  It might not even have any bearing on who you are today, but even its scars are enough to leave you with a very visible scarlet letter... Is entitlement killing the church?

As I look at all the ways the government is moving in to "take care of the 'least of these,'" I'm struck by some of the unintended consequences. Do the poor need an advocate? Yes! Do they need people to actually "do" something? Absolutely! Is faith shown by what we do? It needs to be! But, if the government steps in (a la healthcare, welfare, etc.) what does it actually do to the people who receive help? What kind of culture does it create? What unintended consequences do these people with good intentions create?
